Drug bust at miami market yields 4 arrests
April 28, 2015
On Tuesday, four people were arrested for selling cocaine out of a Miami supermarket, said police.
After investigating the operation for months, police closed in on the owners of a minimarket. People would just walk up and they were selling bags of cocaine. Once police had the evidence that they needed, the Crystal Supermarket in Little Havana was shut down.
According to the police, the owners of the supermarket at 401 Northwest 12th Avenue – a man and a woman were arrested, along with two female clerks.
Kenia Reyes of the Miami Police Department said that what was going on inside the market was not your typical grocery shopping. Reyes said that people would walk up and buy bags of cocaine.
People weren’t buying just a little cocaine, they were buying a lot of it. The investigators said that they found nearly 134 grams of cocaine in the store – a street value of over $10,000. In addition to the drugs, Miami Police found over $18,000 in cash and lots of weapons.
Reyes pointed out how children are often riding their bikes up and down the streets and these types of sales are bringing criminal elements to the neighborhoods.
Some of the store’s customers said that they had no idea that drugs were being sold out of the store, saying that they never noticed anything out of the ordinary.
The investigators said that they had conducted several controlled buys where they purchased bags of cocaine; the most recent purchase was for $200 worth of cocaine.
J. Villalonga, 54, was one of the owners arrested. Police said that he is a felon and was convicted of
drug trafficking in the past. The others arrested were N. Bautista, 49, I. Estrada, 24, and C. Trujillo, 26.
